Robin could care less about a cliché...

" I could care less" is sarcastic.
The sarcasm allows you to express more disdain than simply saying "I couldn't care less."

The expression "I couldn't care less" became common in England in World War Two and was apparently based on an earlier catchphrase "I couldn't agree with you more."

The "could" variant is first found in the mid-1960s and was being Objected to by the 1970s.

Who wants to be a Panacea?

The Reference point in this story is" Who wants to be a Millionaire".  Street smarts did not go anywhere in comparison.

I would use a thesaurus and apply 'panacea' to a game show in this manner...

A "cure-all"  for a programmers ratings problems.

A "countermeasure" to a show like Jeopardy.

Here are some other words to fit into your own sentences...

quick fix,
redress,
relief,
restorative,

treatment.

perfect -

Some people maintain that perfect is as an absolute term like chief and prime and therefore cannot be modified by more, quite, relatively, and other qualifiers of degree (for more on this, see absolute terms under Grammar).

But the qualification of perfect has many reputable precedents (most notably in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution in the phrase “in order to form a more perfect Union “).

Besides, perfect often means “ideal for the purposes,” as in There could be no more perfect spot for the picnic, where modification by degree makes perfect sense.

Comparative Statistics?

Robin was right this week, as everyone was.

robinswrong.com points out, "Robin now has a 1-4 record in 2007 and 4 wins out of the last 30 games, a winning percentage of 13.33%"

These statistics might mean something if a comparative method was used. Perhaps if we had the same calculations for all the players on the show.

My suggestion for other players would be Howard, Fred, and Artie.

With all the information, we might see if Robin actually has a poor record of winning.

01 February 2007

Its easy to be Wrong

Robin did use "Quality" as one of the four C's of diamond buying.

However, Robin did not say "cut, clarity, carat and quality". (*)

Robin's mistake was " cut, clarity, color and quality".

This is getting Silly, the website's mistake is far more egregious then Robins mistake.

(* RobinsWrong.com post was updated with Robin's actual mistake.)

...or whatever

This was the part of Robin's quote that was left off.

Red is the Color!

Another misinterpretation!

It is not referred to as a pink coat. The Red coat is referred to as a "pink".

The Legend of Tailor Pink
Pink can mean the red coat worn in foxhunting (a.k.a. "riding to hounds'').  One theory about the origin of this meaning refers to a tailor named Pink (or Pinke, or Pinque), who invented the design of the outfit.

Collier's Encyclopedia on Foxhunting:
The word "pink'' does not refer to the color of the coat but is a term applied to the state of being formally attired for hunting. It is thought to have had its origin in a tailor by the name of Pink who, in the old days, is supposed to have made the most perfect attire for hunting.

So, if indeed Robin was referring to the color of the coats, they are "red".  Brits use the word scarlet as the colour, and Pink  (Pinke or Pinque) as being dressed traditionally and correct.

If Robin did or does know the term "pink" it would be lost on the American audience for the most part.

The Clueless Listener.

I looked up the word Critic on Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/critic)

I was surprised to find out that being able to do what one is evaluating, is not required.

Simon Cowell is not a good singer, however he is a very good critic.

Robin's ability or inability to sing does not effect her capacity to judge others. This may or may not be true on a playground.

crit·ic (krĭt'ĭk) n.

- One who forms and expresses judgments of the merits, faults, value, or truth of a matter.
- One who specializes especially professionally in the evaluation and appreciation of literary or artistic works: a film critic; a dance critic.
- One who tends to make harsh or carping judgments; a faultfinder.

Duck Robin...

Perhaps "The Amazed Listener" shouldn't be allowed to listen.
You missed the main point of what Robin said.

She said "the duck had a cracked wing (not your misquoted 'broken wing') and needed a 'stent' or something?" But the important point to her story was that the Doctor gave the Duck Mouth to Beak Resuscitation.

If a minor slip discredits a story, the Amazed Listener's slip of 'broken wing' should cause a big delete for the article.

The funny part is she is talking extemporaneously, "the Amazed Listener" is not.

Hey, I got some Soccer Stadium seats over here...

Robins comments about crazy soccer fans and Giant Stadiums was in fact correct.

My first try, I found a large stadium that was rated to the Max capacity of 200,000 when first built, but is currently listed as holding 103,000 fans!

Estádio do Maracanã, "Maracanã stadium", in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estádio_do_Maracanã)

Estádio do Morumbi, was original built with 120,000 seats, but they only allow 75,000 per game for saftey reasons. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estádio_do_Morumbi)

Estadio Azteca, Mexico's largest stadium with 105,000 seats. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estadio_Azteca)

The problem with "The Amazed Listener" is that he gives false or misleading facts, limits information and statistics to prove his Misleading points.

My research took about 15 seconds.

26 January 2007

Grasping for Straws...

I find when I occasionally get to listen to the entire show that things are repeated.

So, why does the Amazed Listener Find it "unbelievable" when something is repeated later in the show? In fact Bits are repeated throughout the show, because the audience changes throughout the show.

Is the occasional Repetition "unbelievable" ?

No, I think it has to do with Bias!

Yes, Bias against Robin.

It is not about Robin being Right or Wrong!

White Van Attack

This is the story that prompted this website.
I remembered reading numerous articles about a "white van" so I googled "white van devlin" and 10 google search pages popped up. I clicked on the first one and a story in The Independent clearly stated in the Headline...

"White van provides clue to double kidnap" (http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article2152440.ece)

I then googled "devlin nissan truck" i got the same number of pages. Many of the pages mentioned "white Nissan truck"

Did Robin make a mistake? Not if she uses News as a source for her news.
